Wet Scrubber

Wet Scrubber is the generic name of an air pollution control device that uses the process of absorption to separate the pollutant from a process gas stream. Absorption is the physical process in which the pollutant leaves the gas phase and is dissolved in the scrubbing liquid phase. It helps to clean the polluted air from an exhaust stream and help the plant to comply with the

environmental standards and to preserve a clean air environment. There are several types of scrubber commonly designed, namely packed-bed counter-current scrubber, structured packing scrubber and cross-flow scrubber. In most air pollution control applications, the materials to be removed are usually acidic or basic gases even though in some cases, organic vapors are also present. Most of the inorganic contaminants are sulphur, phosphorous, halogen, or nitrogen oxides or acids. In other cases, ammonia or chlorine are of concern. A scrubber is effective in removing toxic gases or fumes like HCl, HF, H 2 SO 4 , H 2 S, SO 2 , NH 3 , Cl 2 and others at high removal efficiencies.

Wet scrubbers can achieve extremely high contaminant removals and can operate at a variety of loads. Operation and control are simple, very stable, and ideal for remote, unattended locations. Scrubbing can achieve simultaneous removal of various contaminants as well as provide a measure of gas cooling and particle emission control. Scrubbing produces a liquid waste stream in many cases that has to be dealt with, but in the majority of the cases, this liquid stream does not require post-treatment beyond neutralization.

Venturi scrubber is a system designed to remove airborne particulate matter from exhaust systems, as well as flue and process gasses. Venturi Scrubbers bring the air streams with particulate matters together with water at high velocities to transfer the particulate into the water stream. Venturis can be used to collect both particulate and gaseous pollutants, but they are more effective in

removing particles than gaseous pollutants. Venturis are the most commonly used scrubber for particle collection and are capable of achieving the highest particle collection efficiency of any wet scrubbing system.

They are the most widely used scrubbers because their open construction enables them to remove most particles without plugging or scalding. The ability of venturis to handle large inlet volumes at high temperatures makes them very attractive to many industries; consequently, they are used to reduce particulate emissions in a number of industrial applications.
